RESUMO

Environmental Management Barometer is the name given to a research which is being performed in Europe since 1993 and, in Brazil, realized for the first time in 1999, specifically in Santa Catarina State. The denomination barometer is an analogy to the instrument used to measure the atmospheric pressure that, was aesthetically used to measure the degree of importance that enterprises and employees dedicate to environmental matters, inserted in their developed activities. The structure of the current research follows the same as adopted by the E.B.E.B. version 2000, which is based in 5 steps. The first is related to the economical activity of the enterprises. The second refers to the environmental challenge, approaching the environmental aspects in association with the activities of the enterprises. The third is related to the environmental actions, focusing the environmental management, operational actions, administrative actions, obstacles to the adoption of environmental actions and the groups who influence the taking of environmental steps in the enterprises. The fourth step refers to the environmental goals versus economical goals. This step is dedicated to the potential effects of the environmental measures put in practice and to the defensible development in the enterprises. The fifth step contains general information about the enterprises, their products and their market. This research aimed to identify the several existing relations among the enterprises from Santa Catarina and the environmental matters, as well as, analyze the evolution of the environmental perception of these enterprises and employees comparatively to the obtained results from 1999, in order to bring support to the promotion of the defensible development. Their main results reveal that the environmental management is an increasingly activity that is developed, in several sectors of the enterprises by professionals from different areas, who are increasingly motivated to act in defense of the environment. Referring to the promotion of the defensible development, it is clear that, the adoption of actions in order to promote it is a responsibility from all society and mainly from the enterprise
