RESUMO

The main aim of this work was to study the mechanical characteristics (torsion resistance), microstructure characteristics, besides the chemical analysis of four 2 mm commercial screws used for internal rigid fixation in maxilla-facial surgeries. The screws are very important in the internal fixation of fractures when plate-screw type is used. The main problem with these screw are: they can break during fastening, thread can be loosen, the device can release from the screwdriver, etc. All these problems are due to the low quality regards to the design and materials processing. They can make the surgery more difficult, which implies more surgery time and less comfort to the patient. Four commercial marks of screws (two national and two imported) were chosen and acquired. Based on the torsion test and morphological characterization it was verified that both imported marks had a better performance despite of one the imported device was made of pure titanium while the others were made of Ti-6A1-4Y. It was verified that both imported screws possess large resistance to the sprain that the national ones, although one of the imported screws went of pure titanium, while the other screws went of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Basing on that analysis, it was suggested na ideal profile of screw and it was machined samples with the Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy, which similar properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, however more biocompatible. Furthermore, the results permit to design the new screw type using the Ti-6Al-7Nb, which has a similar mechanical property of the Ti-6Al-4V, however more biocompatible. Torsion test and morphological characterization were undertaken again in this new screw. The results were much better than the one obtained for the Brazilian screw tested before
