RESUMO

In order to evaluate and compare the local and the sistemic effects produced by the Connaught and Moreau Butantan BCG strains, 21 hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) were studied divided in three groups of seven animaIs. ln the control group l only saline soluction 0,9% was instillated. ln the group II Moreau Butantan BCG, 100mglml and 108 bacillus/ml (Butantan lnstitute - São Paulo - Brazil) and in the group III Connaught BCG (Connaught Laboratories Limited, Willowdale - Ontario - Canada) lyophilized with 27mglml and 109 bacillus/ml, for six weeks in intravesical instillation weekly. After 30 days of the last instillation the animals were sacrificed and the peritoneals macrophages were made for the zimosan particles incubated in normal and immunized with Connaught and Moreau Butantan hamster serum (receptor detection for C3) and for the zimosan particles nonopsonized. The phagocytosis for the immunized animaIs increased more than in the control group and Connaught presented the best results, however the immunized animaIs serum had the same potency as the normal serum in the zimosan opsonization. By the histopathological evaluation, granulomatous in immunizated animaIs bladder wall, as well as other organs were observed (liver, spleen), in addition to an infiltration of mononuclear cells and Iymphocytes, showing the BCG penetration through the bladder wall reaching other organs and making a sistemic action with. the immunological activation
