RESUMO

This paper has as a focal point the study of the figurations of those atbIetes selected for the Paralympic Games in Sidney, Australia, in 2000. The inquiry giving emphasis to the socio cultural aspect is centered in the following subject: how the disable atbIetes can make relationships and interdependencies among the severa! social roles they practice? Concerning the objectives of this study, we sought to identify how the interdependencies and relationships found in the figurational dynamics of the paralympic atbIetes are composed oi For this purpose, this research is based on the atbIetes interviews, on the analysis of the speech, and on the late history of the disable woman in top sports. The method used in this work was grounded on the Sociological Theory of Norbert Elias. The main pretension was to connect this Theory with the speaking of the paralympic athletes. There was also a search for balancing the focus point of ana1ysischaracteristic of macro sociology - in the field of collective actions, intergroupingrelationships, comprehendedpatterns of organization and social structure related to groups and society (existing net of groups constructed upon a basis of identities and collective values) - and of micro sociology - in its abundance of unique and standard personalities, individuaIsbeing consideredin their completeness, emerged in passion, interests, perceptions, prejudices, values etc. In the analysis of the data, we found theoretical and empirical subsidies that confirm the reading of the (re)signification process about the role of the paralympic athlete, according to the dispositionsand prospect of the contemporarysociety
