RESUMO

For many decades researchers from various countries have been investigating people’s attitudes towards foreign languages and the people who speak such languages. In Brazil, most investigations have been aimed at Brazilians’ attitudes toward English and its speakers and the results showed positive attitudes. This dissertation, however, shows the result of a study of the attitudes of 274 second grade students towards five languages (German, Spanish, French, English and Portuguese) using the matched guise technique. The results suggest that all of the foreign languages had the higher evaluations towards foreign languages and their respective speakers in both status and solidarity in comparison with the Portuguese language and to the Brazilians. The results also suggest new investigations in the motivational patterns in the study of foreign languages.
