RESUMO

In this dissertation, we study the ethical aspects of a social workerâs role in dealing with the legal system, more specifically, in cases that involve adoption of children and adolescents. This research took place at the Children and Youth Court in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil. Its main focus was to analyze the intervention of the social worker in the qualification process for adoption candidates, in order to identify the values that guide and form the basis of the social study and the recommendation which supports the legal decisions. The adopted methodological procedures were based on document research and content analysis. The empirical material for the analysis consisted of seven âsocial reportsâ from adoption cases. Our theoretical analysis covers the philosophical definition of human ethics; a critical perspective of professional ethics; the historical meaning of family; the concept of justice present in the thinking of Plato, Aristotle, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Hobbes, Perelman, Raws; and the adoption theme, focusing on the socialjuridical aspects. In our analysis, we concluded that, currently, social workers are guided primarily by family values, most notably, family organization and relationships
