RESUMO

The aim of this study is to carry out an analysis on phonological aspects of Xetá, a language of branch I of the Tupí-Guaraní language family (Rodrigues 1985, Rodrigues &Cabral 2002). The first chapter consists in an outline of the Xetá community and language. In chapter two the phonetic segments of the language with their respective environments are presented. The interpretation and description of consonantal and vocalic phonemes is given in chapters three and four. Finally chapter five presents the syllable patterns and the occurrence of stress. This study is a contribution to the knowledge of a language in a final stage of extinction. Audio records available in the Laboratório de Línguas Indígenas of the University of Brasilia have enabled this study in the same way as they may help in the description of other aspects of this language.
