RESUMO

This research analyzes the advent and structure of a social group claiming the control of process of space production, emphasizing the institutional-cognitive dimension and having as an empirical basis São Paulo Metropolitan Area - SPMA, Brazil. The main objective of this study is to explain the behavior of that human community and evaluate the amplitude and profoundness of its influence and conditioning on the metropolis and its social order. From this point of view, agent and institutions are at evidence because they produce perception and appreciation schemes which originate social-cognitive models of metropolis, principles which foster social practices of production, appropriation and consumption of urban space. The production of space and social order in the metropolis does not result from spontaneous cooperation of isolated individuals or the functioning of free-market as an auto-adjustable institution. It stems from competition and cooperation of specialized agents and institutions in the inner part of a specific social space an urbanistic field. This work claims that, as a hierarchical social space of agents and institutions which establish objective relations, the urbanistic field develops relative autonomy, creating its own functioning and reproducing rules in relation to other social (legal, political and scientific) spaces and society in general. In addition, It also explains the dynamics of a model constitution of urbanistic reality and how they are transposed to the territory as a collection of interconnected objects and communicators who provide coherence and meaning to the organized domination of the metropolis. In conclusion, the social activity of space production in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area (SPMA) is ,on a growing basis, influenced and conditioned (not determined) by the urbanistic field occurrences and its interactions with other fields of material and symbolic production. The produced space is a result of a political and cognitive struggle which ranges from local to global scope, forming a new work division of organized denomination where market city and city right appear as urbanistic reality models disputing the monopoly of a metropolis way of being.
