RESUMO

This study deals with stars of axé music in the Carnival of Salvador. It examines the participation of these star singers in the construction of a representation of Bahian society, specifically the capital and the Recôncavo region. This form of representation, which attained visibility in the past few decades, has come to be referred to in the media and in academia as baianidade. The present study argues that this kind of high-profile participation in Carnival began with the tradition of the baiana, which can be traced to the 19th century written record on the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro, and, in the 20th century, to theater and cinema. The study emphasizes these artists participation in Carnival and traces the continuities between past eras and the present. The methodology is constructed in dialogue with a variety of scholars, most in the area of Cultural Studies. However, the main inspiration comes from the work of Edgard Morin, especially his concept of stardom. In the city of Salvadorspecifically, its Carnivalsince the second half of the 1980s, artistic practices began to be structured in a new way, which contributed to a new configuration of the music inductry and of Carnival, expanding the space of the star singer. This new configuration is seen in three artists: Daniela Mercury, Margareth Menezes and Ivete Sangalo. The study includes a detailed analysis of the career of each of these singer-stars, in the sense of identifying the constitutive elements of their success. Fundamentally, this has to do with their capacity to establish themselves as auteurs and as managers of their careers.
