RESUMO

This study seeks to define dynamics of the mentoring process, correlation to learning contributing to development of work-related capabilities, and the resulting effect on the professional careers of Directing Professors at a University in Recife, Brazil. More specifically, characteristics of the informal mentoring network, constructed for the Directors and their Mentors, were analyzed as to diversity and intensity. The theoretical-conceptual orientation arose from the typology separating the Mentorship in terms of relationships formed, and type of abilities developed, from Eby (1997); and from the theoretical perspective that considers mentoring as a phenomenon of developing multiple relations, from Higgins and Kram (2001). The key premise is that MentorApprentice learning for the Directors is interrelated to support for development of professional abilities. A study of learning involving the Academic Directors, in light of mentoring relations, produced findings that make it possible to understand the dynamics of exchanges in these relationship networks formed along the paths these professionals travel. Qualitative-interpretive methodology was utilized as the approach, and research strategy development was oriented around case study protocol. The pilot study and preliminary testing preceded the definitive data collection step. Twenty one Directors were interviewed using standard interview protocol. In addition to the interviews, free association techniques were used to identify common characteristics shared in the learning process, and the interview records were used to identify mentoring functions. These diverse instruments used in the field work provided possibilities for collection of information from various sources of complementary evidence, permitting an increase in the studys validity and confidence. The results show that career, as well as psycho-social functions were exercised by the Mentors, and that these functions could be separated into varying levels of importance. Traditional relations were developed within the mentoring network for the Directors, with strong bonds, little diversity, and few Mentors. The relationship network for mentoring is formed by Mentors pertinent to the academic and/or familial framework.
