RESUMO

A new pulsed reactor concept VICHFPR (Very Intense High Continuous Flux Pulsed Reactor) was presented in 1997 as a possible extension of IBR-2 periodically pulsed Russian reactor. The concept has an annular core which is traversed by a reactivity modulator responsible for generating a rotating neutron pulse. While the most part of the core operates under subcriticality (kef<1), the region adjacent to the modulator has prompt supercriticality (kef>1+β), producing a flux level significantly larger than the average. The flux advantage factor for the concept is the ratio between the maximum and average flux values along the core. This principle can be used to generate high fluence levels needed, for example, to evaluate damages in reactor elements, to burn radioactive waste and to produce transuranic isotopes. The parametric analysis performed in this study evaluated the effects of the core and modulator dimensions and of the delayed-neutron fraction on the type of fissile material in the advantage factor and in the neutron flux distribution. For this purpose a computation code ANALISE in FORTRAN language was developed to carry out the numerical simulations. A finite difference algorithm using generalized Crank-Nicolson method was employed for space-time discretization applied to the opened-up geometry of the core. Subsequently in order to obtain the neutron flux distribution in the core and the advantage factor value, delayed-neutron precursor concentration distribution was calculated and, finally, the magnitude of the pulse in the neutron flux distribution was revaluated. The presence of a rotating neutron pulse, the linear proportionality of the advantage factor with the perimeter, the independence of the advantage factor in order to the delayed-neutron fraction were demonstrated. A uniform delayed-neutron precursor concentration distribution to the three fissile elements was found along the core, while the magnitude of the pulse remained unaltered
