RESUMO

This research aims at analysing the cooperative model for the alternative sustained competitiveness for small-sized transport companies. This research will contemplate coordinated cooperation as the competitive strategy for small-sized companies; the existing relationship between coordinated competitiveness, segmentation, leadership in terms of costs and competitive edge in the pursuit of a competitive position, based on the Grupo Oeste Transportes (GOT) company in the city of Oswaldo Cruz, in the state of São Paulo. The company was founded in March 2001 as an association of small-sized companies from the road transportation of cargo segment of that city. Cooperative-competitive approaches can be considered long-term sustainability tools in the competitive standpoint, for which they will require a planned, coordinated and integrated cooperative and competitive process. Taking into consideration phenomena that were examined for this research, it can be defined as ex post facto and was carried out via a survey and a case study. The population that was examined for this work is comprised of the 30 companies that encompass the Grupo Oeste Transportes, of which 20 were sampled. Data was collected by employing a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Collected data was analysed according to statistics techniques and content analysis. In the studys conclusion it is shown that GOT is set up as strong-partnership cluster. Based on GOTs sampling, it has been concluded that small-sized companies can obtain a competitive edge by combining the cooperative approach with leadership strategies for total costs, differentiation and focus, together with segmentation marketing concepts. The cooperative strategy adopted by the group has provided a competitive edge to most of the companies, whereby costs with the retreading of tyres and buying lorries by the lot were reduced. Segmentation furthered sustained competitive edge to the associated companies, as the target market is growing significantly. Thus, by adopting the coordinated cooperative model in step with identified strategies GOT has been able to give to its associated companies a sustained competitiveness, rendering those more qualified and ready for optimum performance that would not be attainable if they were operating individually.
