RESUMO

In the past, blindness was considered basically as the inability of realize visual perception. Currently, the main scientific approaches integrates all the competing variable involved with this complex phenomenon in close relation with the organization of all superior psychological functions, including Language. Studies about the development of language in blind babies, is scarce in Brazil, especially during the months of life. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the interactions between the blind babies, their respective mothers and its repercussions in the acquisition and development of the verbal language. We performed a qualitative, quantitative and observational comparison using protocols and video footage, focusing the interactions between blind and sighted children with their respective mothers by comparing the performance of 6 children with congenital blindness and 6 children with normal vision. The results suggest that some specific linguistic manifestations were impaired when compared to sighted children. The results indicate deficit in exploring objects and in the non-verbal language of the blind children when compared to the control group, characterizing a delay on the verbal language usage. Additional studies of other groups suggests that congenital visual impairment might delay the standard linguistic development in about 30% approximately when compared with sighted children. Although hearing skills are highly relevant to the language acquisition process and development of verbal language, the vision also consists an important element, despite the general limited parental and professional oversee toward this aspect. This kind of study might be relevant to understand the basis of language acquisition, in a very singular situation such as blindness, and eventually to improve the current therapeutic management of this condition
