RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare clinically the effects under pain, swelling and mouth-opening after the use of 4mg dexametasone administered by two routes, enteral and parenteral, in patients who had extractions bilaterally included mandibular third molars in the similar positions. They was included 19 patient, in the age group among 15 to 25 years old, presenting condition health and without any dexametasone adverse factor. The patients were submitted to extractions of the mandibular third molars in different sessions, for one side was used orally and to the opposite the intramuscular route in the masseter muscle. The postoperative pain was evaluated by means of visual analogical scale (VAS)(KEESLlNG &KEATS, 1958), and numbers of analgesic consumed. The swelling was evaluated by measurements of the distance facial references points by means of lineal measures as described for NEUPERT III et aI., in 1992, and by comparative measurements of pre and postoperative photography. The mouth-opening was measured distance pre and postoperative central incisors by caliper. Data pain visual analogue scale, analgesic consumed, mouth-opening and edema for the photographic method were submitted by pair Wilcoxon test (p>0,05). Data obtained in the facial references points were submitted to Tukey s test (p >0,05). No statistically difference results was observed betwen the administration routes considering pain, mouth-opening and swelling by photographic method. However, a lower swelling was observed on parenteral route in facial references points method. These results indicate that in the extractions mandibular included third molars, no differences in the pain postoperative intensity and degree mouth-opening limitation, used 4mg of dexametasona, in only dose, orally or intramuscular (injection in the muscle masseter). The dexametasone administered by intramuscular route in the immediate postoperative, it indicated better control of the edema, according to analysis references facial points differing results of the photographic analysis
