RESUMO

How the Catholic Church was pawned in educating the feminine body in the confessional schools of the beginning of the century XX? Which physical practices were going by in this environment? These are the questions advisors dissertation. We investigate on some initiatives of the Church in offering a formal education for the women, the characteristics of the schools and the physical practices that were existing in this outline. The Congregation of the Benedictine arrived MissionÃrias of Germany and founding of some schools in the state Pernambuco it was to base for our narrative that it spread an analysis out up to the end of the years of 1930, so, in the Academia Santa Gertrudes, by this group of Sisters on Brazil, on 1912, it was possible to find our empirical material. The fountains arranged in the school, like, for example, the Chronic writings by the Sisters, the Historical of the Association of the Instructors MissionÃrias, the Company rules of the Pupils and Photographies of the Pupils and Sisters helped us in the proposed analysis, taking into account the perspectives of Nova HistÃria. The text is divided in four chapters, where we emphasize a historical contextualizaÃÃo of some initiatives of the Catholic Church that pointed to the structuring of institutions of teaching to the women. We detach the memory of the Benedictine MissionÃrias, while one of the arrived congregations of Europe to drive ways of the Brazilian education. Another emphasized question went to relation between education, body and religion taking as a referential system some authors as Michel Foucault, Ervin Goffman and Norbert Elias. Finally, we carry out an analysis iconogrÃfica of the present material in the institution, talking to other fountains. Before that, we realize that the Benedictine ones carried out an education coherent work to the proposed one for the Church in the first decades of the century XX, that direcionava an education turned to the Holy Virtues of the catholic women. The physical present practices in this institution revealed a possible attitude vanguardista of the Benedictine ones, which were pawned from the construction of the school in offering experiences that were emphasizing physical exercises, like, for example, the gymnastics, the sports, the plays and the dances. However, all these existences were reinforced by an idea of order, discipline, moral and decency showing that the education of the feminine body for the Benedictine MissionÃrias was one of the present Virtues in the school of the MissionÃrias AlemÃs
