RESUMO

The aim of this work is to elaborate a tutoring system using hypertext resources to link together: i) concepts and definitions regarding Post-Tonal Theory, ii) operations available within the Set Class Processor by Dr. Jamary Oliveira, e iii) composition exercises. This type of integration allows users to transfer knowledge between the first two sections, and to apply the learned concepts by means of the third one. Chapter 1 describes the formal structure of the work and the technical issues involved in its development. Chapter 2 presents a brief historical overview of how the theory was created, details of the Set Class Processor?s documentation, and comments on the translation of the book entitled Introduction to Post-Tonal Theory by Dr. Joseph N. Straus. The translation of that book was permitted by the author and is included as an annex. Chapter 2 is also connected to Appendix 1, which contains statistical data about the works that were most frequently used as examples to the theory topics. Chapter 3 covers the issues related to the tutoring system and connects it to three appendixes: Appendix 2, which lists the acronyms related to XML (the markup language used in the tutoring system); Appendix 3, which includes the XML Schema documentation and the tutoring system?s XML code; and Appendix 3, which contains a musical composition based on the solutions to the exercises. Finally, Chapter 4 provides the conclusion of this work. A CD containing the tutoring system, the Schema documentation in HTML format and a digital recording of the composition is also attached.
