RESUMO

Our hypothesis in this work in that the phenomenon of polyphony can be detected not only in the form ânovelâ, but also in many other discursive forms. In reports (crÃnicas) for example, which was the focus of this research, it is very possible to identify the phenomenon of polyphony. The aim of this work is to analyze Lima Barretoâs reports (crÃnicas) published in magazines and newspapers of the 20th century, observing how polyphony occurs in these texts. In other words, we aim to observe the several voices that can be identified within the authorâs discourse, and the linguistics mechanisms used by the author to make these voices emerge. We have chosen a literary form, and specifically Lima Barreto, firstly because of its documental and historical value, revealing social and historical facts of Brazilâs First Republic. Secondly, because Lima Barretoâs texts have never been analyzed before, and have never been selected by critics, who have always preferred Lima Barretoâs novels, not giving to his reports (crÃnicas) the importance they deserve. In order to develop this work we adopted Bakhtinâs (2004; 2005) and Ducrotâs (1987) concepts as well as CÃndidoâs (1992) and SÃâs (2002) studies. This work is also based on several other authorsâ studies about the form report (crÃnica). We have analyzed a corpus of twenty five Brazilian reports (crÃnicas), and have concluded that polyphony is a very common phenomenon in Lima Barretoâs reports (crÃnicas). Nevertheless, in accordance with Bakhtinâs findings for DostoiÃvskiâs novels, we also found that within reports (crÃnicas) polyphony does not occur intensively
