RESUMO

This thesis analyses the Mission of the Non-Governmental Organization and seeks to understand how the current process of professionalization of the Third Sector impacts upon it. The perspective adopted aims to examine the interaction between these two phenomenon that, in turn, can be considered two different sides of the same reality. The mission of the NGOs is understood, in broad terms, as an humanitarian one â promoting ethics, peace, citizenship and so forth â and is associated with the goals of institutions that seek to fight racial, social and sexual discrimination. The process of professionalization, in turn, comprises the technical aspect of this mission, which aims at planing, managing and executing the NGOs activities. The thesisâ main concerns are on the interaction between Mission and professionalization and on their reciprocal influences, attempting to reveal the different dimensions of the behaviour of NGOs members. In order for this goal to be achieved, we will discuss the meaning of Non-Governmental Organizations, as well as the concepts of âMissionâ and âProfessionalizationâ. Two case studies are used to assess the impact of the professionalization process on the NGOs missions â how these two conceptions are represented in practical contexts â considering the influence of other factors, like the financial sustainability of these organizations, the kind of relationship they have with the Government and the Market and how the division of the social work and the specialization take place inside their structure.
