RESUMO

This thesis, which intends to reconstruct the process of creation of a specific translator, innovates when it combines the theoretical and methodological basis of Genetic Criticism and of Descriptive Translation Studies. All the available prototext that has pointed to the so considered final text was taken into account in the present analysis. In the research, the double role of the translator has been taken into consideration, either as the author of a new text or as a professional that has his or her own strategies to create and recreate texts. The corpus includes five notebooks containing the autographed translation of poems written by Emily Dickinson. The translations by the Italian poet Rina Sara Virgillito are in the National Archive of Florence, Italy, together with others documents related to Virgillitos poetic production and her activities as a translator, as well as letters, drawings, diaries dated from the period when the process of translation of the poems under consideration in this paper (from November 10th, 1995 to January 15th, 1996). Apart from that, this research also proposes to question, in the light of Virgillitos genetic translation process, some prejudices regarding the activities of the translator and the author, in general, such as the assumed fidelity to the source text and its status of superiority when compared to the target one, not to mention the possibility of being objective in matters of interpretation and also the idea of authorship.
