RESUMO

The author, from his practical experience with compulsive drug users who had been in a psychiatrical clinic, develops the hypothesis that these patients do not have developed the capacity of thinking in a symbolic way, due to a failure in the performance of the paternal function in their formation. This limitation to symbolization would be in the origin of an omnipotent behavior, which includes, among its modes of expression, the compulsive use of drugs. The drug use would work as a ?transitional object?, mainly worn during adolescence, a cycle interpreted as a ?potential space?. The psychiatric hospitalization should be a very useful resource if it could perform the paternal function in order to achieve both the patient and their family growth
