1. Could semiquantitative analysis of real-time ultrasound elastography distinguish more liver parenchyma alterations of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome?
ABSTRACT Objective: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the commonest diffuse liver disease, of which women with polycystic ovary syndrome are at an increased risk. The aim of the present study was to assess the diagnostic value of the semiquantitative strain parameters of real-time ultrasound elastography for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in patients wi

Over the last decades, the growth of population and industrial activities has contributed to the aggravation of environmental problems, especially the contamination of superficial and underground waters. This is mainly caused by the enormous amounts of domestic or industrial wastes that are many times discarded directly into these bodies with no previous tre

4. Ultrasonic examination in severe diabetic eye disease.
B-scan ultrasound of the posterior segment is reported in 154 patients with severe diabetic eye disease. Epiretinal fibrosis, vitreous haemorrhage, vitreous detachment, and retinal detachment were frequently diagnosed. The ultrasonic findings are discussed in relation to the pathological changes in the vitreous in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

5. Antenatal detection of grossly distended bladder owing to absence of the urethra in a fetus with trisomy 18.
An ultrasonic examination revealed a grossly distended fetal abdomen. Amniocentesis at 19 weeks' gestation showed raised amniotic fluid alphafetoprotein, a second band of specific acetylcholinesterase, and a fetal karyotype 47,XY,+18. The pregnancy was terminated and the necropsy examination showed absence of the urethra, grossly distended bladder, hydrouret

6. Rapid B-scanning of the vitreous.
Ultrasonic examination is an essential investigation in most patients awaiting vitrectomy. Rapid B-scanning of the vitreous is described utilising a new system capable of high resolution and good tonal quality. Several patterns of haemorrhagic invasion of the vitreous cavity are illustrated, together with detachment, collapse, and retraction of the vitreous

7. Hypertensive retinopathy in a cat
A 12-year-old cat presented for sudden blindness was diagnosed with hypertensive retinopathy on the basis of ophthalmologic and ultrasonic examination. Renal failure due to a large intranephric cyst obstructing the right ureter and renal artery was the suggested cause of the systemic hypertension. The cat died 8 hours after unilateral nephrectomy.

8. Ultrasound-enhanced polymer degradation and release of incorporated substances.
The effect of ultrasound on the degradation of polymers and the release rate of incorporated molecules within those polymers was examined. Up to 5-fold reversible increases in degradation rate and up to 20-fold reversible increases in release rate of incorporated molecules were observed with biodegradable polyanhydrides, polyglycolides, and polylactides. Up

9. Assessing atherosclerotic plaque morphology: comparison of optical coherence tomography and high frequency intravascular ultrasound.
BACKGROUND: OCT can image plaque microstructure at a level of resolution not previously demonstrated with other imaging techniques because it uses infrared light rather than acoustic waves. OBJECTIVES: To compare optical coherence tomography (OCT) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging of in vitro atherosclerotic plaques. METHODS: Segments of abdominal

10. Microsatellite in the beta-tubulin gene of Toxoplasma gondii as a new genetic marker for use in direct screening of amniotic fluids.
To examine the correlation between Toxoplasma gondii genotype and congenital human toxoplasmosis, the polymorphism of the microsatellite consisting of a dinucleotide (TG) repeat in the intron of the beta-tubulin gene was investigated by PCR. Thirty-four reference strains were studied, including 7 strains virulent in mice and 27 strains avirulent in mice. The

11. Improved Culturability of Soil Bacteria and Isolation in Pure Culture of Novel Members of the Divisions Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia
The culturability of bacteria in the bulk soil of an Australian pasture was investigated by using nutrient broth at 1/100 of its normal concentration (dilute nutrient broth [DNB]) as the growth medium. Three-tube most-probable-number serial dilution culture resulted in a mean viable count that was only 1.4% of the mean microscopically determined total cell c

12. Ocular effects of exposure to triethylamine in the sand core cold box of a foundry.
OBJECTIVES--To assess the acute and chronic ophthalmological effects of triethylamine exposure among foundry workers. METHODS--Ocular effects on people currently, previously, and never exposed to triethylamine in a foundry cold box were studied at two points in time. The initial phase included an ocular examination with a slit lamp to assess corneal health,
