1. Distribution patterns of meiofauna on a tropical macrotidal sandy beach, with special focus on nematodes (Caixa d’Água, Amazon Coast, Brazil)
Abstract Spatial distribution patterns (both horizontal and vertical) of meiofauna, with special focus on nematodes, on a tropical macrotidal beach across different climatic periods were analyzed in this study. Samplings were carried out at five stations in the intertidal zone in June (rainy season) and December (dry season), 2011. At each station, three sam

2. Spatial and seasonal changes in benthic macrofauna from two dissipative sandy beaches in eastern Brazil)

3. Assessing the sources of high fecal coliform levels at an urban tropical beach
Recreational water quality is commonly assessed by microbial indicators such as fecal coliforms. Maceió is the capital of Alagoas state, located in tropical northeastern Brazil. Its beaches are considered as the most beautiful urban beaches in the country. Jatiúca Beach in Maceió was found to be unsuitable for bathing continuously during the year of 2011.

4. Fish assemblages along a morphodynamic continuum on three tropical beaches
No tota

5. What can we learn from confusing Olivella columellaris and O. semistriata (Olivellidae, Gastropoda), two key species in panamic sandy beach ecosystems?
Olivella columellaris (Sowerby 1825) and O. semistriata (Gray 1839) are suspension-feeding, swash-surfing snails on tropical sandy beaches of the east Pacific. While they often are the numerically dominant macrofaunal element in their habitats, their biology is poorly understood; the two species actually have been confused in all of the few publications that

6. Species composition and abundance of the benthic community of Axiidea and Gebiidea (Crustacea: Decapoda) in the Marapanim Bay, Amazon estuary, northern Brazil
The thalassinideans (Axiidea and Gebiidea) encompasses approximately 615 species with reclusive habits, generally confined to extensive galleries burrowed into the sand or mud and, more rarely, in openings in reefs or the cavities of sessile animals such as sponges and coral. These species use the galleries for shelter, feeding and breeding, except during th

The aim of this study was to discuss the role of tourism while a vector of the northeast littoral`s space (re)production. As a case was taken the reality Gamela`s beach and the Aver-O-Mar traditional fisherman`s community, located at Pernambuco`s Southern Littoral. The touristification process of the space started with the tourism ideology that tourism is th

The methodology used for assessing users environmental perception on Boa Viagem beach is discussed. The objective was to describe beach usersâ socio-economic profile, frequency, habits, type of use and perception regarding the beach environment, with emphasis on coastal erosion and its prevention. The procedures adopted in each steps of the research are des

The estuaries are important investigation zones of the actual morphodynamic and of depositional facies of recent geological history. They are constituted in important receptor means of the coastal area sediments, where the evolutionary processes occur quickly. They are also attractive means for the development of anthropic activities, which in a disordered w

A comprehensive study involving 52 microtidal beaches spanning from reflective to dissipative states and located in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans was carried out to unravel the relative roles of latitude and beach morphodynamics in determining beach macrobenthic species richness, abundance, biomass and

11. Echinodermata das praias de Salvador (Bahia, Brasil)
This paper presents 28 species of Echinoderms collected on 5 beaches of Salvador (12º54' to 13º01' S and 38º26' to 38º33' W), Brazil, which are distributed in 19 families. Ophiuroidea represented 53,6% of the collected species, followed by Echinoidea (28,6%), Asteroidea (7,1%), Holothuroidea (7,1%), and Crinoidea (3,6%). Ophiuroidea and Echinoidea were t
