13. Potential role of zinc in the visceromegaly regression and recovery of hematological parameters during treatment of visceral leishmaniasis in children from an endemic area
ABSTRACT Leishmaniasis is a disease complex with various clinical symptoms caused by different species of parasites of the genus Leishmania. The visceral form of the disease, characterized by severe symptoms is fatal, if not treated. The high toxicity of current antileishmanial drugs and the need for long-term treatment make the therapy complicated, especial

14. MERCURY IN THE SEDIMENT OF PELOTAS RIVER BASIN, BRAZIL
ABSTRACT Many studies have determined the concentration of trace elements in river sediments in Brazil. Notwithstanding, mercury assessments are scarce, especially because of exclusive extraction techniques and expensive analysis techniques. Still, this element is known for its toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation, making its presence in the environmen

15. Evaluation of Distribution and Bioaccumulation of Arsenic by ICP-MS in Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Cultivated in Different Environments
The concentration of arsenic in tissues of tilapia was evaluated and an estimation of the risks associated with the consumption of this fish was done, taking into account the guidelines established by FAO/WHO. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) technique in kinetic energy discrimination (KED) mode was employed and certified reference m

16. AVALIAÇÃO DA LIBERAÇÃO DE ELEMENTOS TRAÇO EM SOLOS TRATADOS COM XISTO RETORTADO
Soils that had received successive applications of retorted oil shale (ROS) in an experiment under field conditions were used in this study, aiming to evaluate the availability of trace elements. In the batch tests, we observed that toxic elements present in the ROS are not desorbed from the matrix in significant amounts to contaminate soil and groundwater.

17. Mineral element and heavy metal (cadmium, lead and arsenic) levels of bee pollen in Turkey
Abstract In this study, mineral element and heavy metal levels in bee pollen produced in various regions of Turkey (20 samples) and imported bee pollen (4 samples), were determined using an Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) device. Mineral and heavy metal levels of bee pollens produced in Turkey were determined to be within t

18. Trace mineral requirements for growth of Moxotó goats grazing in the semiarid region of Brazil
ABSTRACT A comparative slaughter trial was conducted to estimate the body composition and net requirements of Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Co for growth of castrated Moxotó goat kids, with15.69±0.78 kg initial body weight (BW), grazing in the semiarid region of Brazil. The baseline group consisted of four randomly selected kids (15.37±0.30 kg BW). Thirty-two kids

19. Iron restriction increases myoglobin gene and protein expression in Soleus muscle of rats
ABSTRACT Iron is an important trace element for proper cell functioning. It is present in cytochromes, hemoglobin and myoglobin (Mb), where it binds to oxygen. It is also an electron acceptor in the respiratory chain. Mb is an 18 kDa heme-protein, highly expressed in skeletal muscle and heart. The expression of several genes involved in the metabolism of iro

20. Barium and its Importance as an Indicator of (Paleo)Productivity
ABSTRACT Barium (Ba) is a trace element which occurs predominantly as barite mineral (BaSO4) in the marine environment. Previous work suggests that barite concentrations are related to the organic carbon flux and marine biological debris in the water column suggesting a direct or indirect involvement in the marine biological cycling. In addition, barite has

21. Integrated Synthesis of Zeolites Using Coal Fly Ash: Element Distribution in the Products, Washing Waters and Effluent
Coal fly ash has been proposed as an alternative raw material for zeolite synthesis, however, the mobilization of toxic elements of this material into zeolite products, washing water and effluent is rarely addressed. In this study, Brazilian coal fly ash was used in the integrated synthesis (two steps) of zeolites Na-P1 and 4A and the distribution of approxi

22. An Evaluation of the Use of Formic Acid for Extraction of Trace Elements from Brazil Nut and Babassu Coconut and Its Suitability for Multi-Element Determination by ICP-MS
Formic acid extractions of Brazil nut and babassu coconut samples were undertaken prior to determination of Al, As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, V and Zn in their meat and oil portions by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in an effort to accomplish a first order fractionation of the trace elements between these two components.

23. Use of silicon for skin and hair care: an approach of chemical forms available and efficacy
Abstract Silicon is the second most abundant element on Earth, and the third most abundant trace element in human body. It is present in water, plant and animal sources. On the skin, it is suggested that silicon is important for optimal collagen synthesis and activation of hydroxylating enzymes, improving skin strength and elasticity. Regarding hair benefits

24. DETERMINATION OF Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn AND FREE FATTY ACIDS IN PEQUI OIL
Pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.), a typical fruit of the Brazilian Cerrado, is an important source of micronutrients and fatty acids. In this work, a new approach for the acid digestion (using H2SO4, HNO3 and H2O2) of pequi oil samples and the determination of Cu, Fe, Zn and Mn by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F AAS) was employed. Capillary zone el
