1. Efeito de lente térmica e não-linearidades ópticas do silício amorfo hidrogenado dopado com fósforo. / Thermal lens effect and optical nonlinearities of hidrogenated amorphous silicon doped with phosphorus.

2. Efeito anomalo nas medidas de lente termica em vidros com pontos quanticos de CdTe / Anomalous effect in thermal lens measurements in CdTe quantum dot doped glasses
Semiconductor doped glasses are of great interest because of their non-linear optical properties and short response time due to quantum confinement. In this work, we used the thermal lens technique to determine the thermal diffusivity (a ) and the behavior of the temperature coefficient of the refractive index (dn/dT ) in CdTe doped borosilicate glasses trea

3. New applications of photothermal techniques for studying interfaces. / Novas aplicações de técnicas fototérmicas para o estudo de interfaces.
This work presents the development of new instrumentations based on photothermal phenomena to study solid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces, including in the latter the effect of surfactants. The work is divided into chapters, each one focusing on the development and/or application of a new technique. Chapter I presents an introduction to photothermal phenome

4. Espectroscopia não linear em cristais fluoretos e polianilina / Nonlinear spectroscopic characterization in fluoride crystals and polyaniline
In this work we studied the effect of nonlinear refraction in Cr+3 doped fluoride host crystals and polymers. The fluoride crystals have been attractive due a broad emission bandwidth and a tunable solid-state lasing in the range of approximately 780-1010 nm. Applying the Thermal Lens (TL) technique, we accomplished a quantitative study of the behavior of th

5. Cataracts and avionic radiations.
Nine cases of hertzian radiation cataracts are reported among personnel working in operational aviation environments, where they were irradiated repeatedly at subliminal non-thermal field intensities. The resultant ocular pathology evolved insidiously and slowly over a period of years in a similar way to other forms of radiational injury. By the time of cons

6. Two-photon spectroscopy of locked-11-cis-rhodopsin: evidence for a protonated Schiff base in a neutral protein binding site.
We studied the nature of the protein binding site of rhodopsin, using two-photon spectroscopy to assign the location of the low-lying "covalent" 1Ag*- -like pi pi * state in a model rhodopsin containing a locked-11-cis chromophore. The two-photon thermal lens maximum is observed at 22,800 cm-1, approximately equal to 2000 cm-1 above the one-photon absorption
