1. Genetic diversity of eight wild populations of Pampus argenteus along the coast of China inferred from fifteen polymorphic microsatellite markers
Abstract Pampus argenteus (Perciformes: Stromateidae) is widely distributed along the coast of China, Indian Ocean, Arabian Gulf and North Sea. Due to overfishing and environmental degradation, its resources reduced year after year. Thus, new management strategies are urgently needed for the sustainable growth and utilization of this species. Characterizatio

2. Microsatellites for detecting inconsistencies in Capsicum cultivars registration in Brazilian database: more than meets the eye

3. Genetic variability revealed by microsatellite markers in a germplasm collection of Jatropha curcas L. in Brazil: an important plant for biofuels
Abstract We evaluated the genetic variability of a collection of Jatropha curcas germplasm, represented by 93 accessions, using microsatellite markers. Among the 60 markers tested, five of them detected polymorphisms, with a total of 11 alleles and mean of 2.2 alleles per loci. These five markers enabled the quantification of genetic variability through esti

4. Morphological and genetic perspectives of hybridization in two contact zones of closely related species of Petunia (Solanaceae) in southern Brazil
ABSTRACT Interspecific hybridization has several consequences for parental species, from blurring species limits to the emergence of new taxa. Petunia axillaris and P. exserta occur in sympatry in southernmost Brazil and naturally hybridize despite their different pollination syndromes and habitat requirements. We employed genetic and morphological analyses

5. Species boundary and extensive hybridization and introgression in Petunia
ABSTRACT Studying the role of hybridization in the speciation of plants is one of the most thrilling areas of evolutionary biology. Hybridization in natural populations can act in opposition to divergence, contribute to adaptation through introgression or foster the emergence of new lineages via hybrid speciation. Species of the plant genus Petunia grow in o

7. Genetic diversity and population structure of Brycon nattereri (Characiformes: Bryconidae): a Neotropical fish under threat of extinction

8. Mating system analysis of Açaí-do-Amazonas (Euterpe precatoria Mart.) using molecular markers
Abstract Euterpe precatoria (Açaí-do-Amazonas) produces fruits of which the fresh pulp is consumed. It is almost exclusively collected by extractivist farmers, because no selected genotypes are available for the establishment of plantations. For the domestication and breeding of the species, mating system studies are needed for strategy formulation. This s

9. Genetic diversity and population structure of naturally rare Calibrachoa species with small distribution in southern Brazil
Abstract Calibrachoa is a South-American genus comprising 27 species, several considered endemic or rare; few were subjects in genetic studies. We attempted to generate new data about the phylogenetically related and rare species C. eglandulata, C. sendtneriana, C. serrulata, and C. spathulata concerning their genetic diversity and population structure, whic

10. Cross-genera SSR transferability in cacti revealed by a case study using Cereus (Cereeae, Cactaceae)
Abstract The study of transferability of simple sequence repeats (SSR) among closely related species is a well-known strategy in population genetics, however transferability among distinct genera is less common. We tested cross-genera SSR amplification in the family Cactaceae using a total of 20 heterologous primers previously developed for the genera Arioca

11. Development and characterization of 20 polymorphic microsatellite markers for Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe, 1834) (Perciformes: Epinephelidae) using 454 pyrosequencing
Abstract The dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus, is a well-known and widespread marine fish assessed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Analyzing the genetic diversity of this species is, therefore, of utmost importance and necessary for conservation purposes. Microsatellites are molecular tools with advantages that a

12. In silico identification and characterization of novel microsatellite loci for the Blue-and-yellow Macaw Ara ararauna (Linnaeus, 1758) (Psittaciformes, Psittacidae)
Abstract The illegal trade is a major threat to many bird species, and parrots are common victims of this activity. Domestic and international pet markets are interested on different parrot species, such as the Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna). This South American macaw is not globally threatened, but is under protection from over-exploitation. This stud
