13. Variation of amphipod assemblage along the Sargassum stenophyllum (Phaeophyta, Fucales) thallus
ABSTRACTThe spatial distribution of fauna associated to marine macroalgae has mostly been investigated considering a horizontal plane. However, the macroalgal substrates can present a three-dimensional structure. In this sense, investigating how the associated fauna varies throughout a vertical plane can contribute to understanding the distribution of these

14. Descriptions of Cottoniella fusiformis, Branchioglossumcf. minutum and Frikkiella searlesii (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) from the Brazilian continental shelf
The diversity and distribution of marine macroalgae along the Brazilian coast have been investigated in detail. However, information about the deep-water macroalgal flora remains scarce, available mostly in scattered publications or gray literature. In this context, the aim of this study was to describe three specimens of Rhodophyta (Cottoniella fusiformis,

15. Algal polysaccharides as source of plant resistance inducers
Algal compounds exhibit great potential to enhance plant growth and resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. This review focuses on aspects concerning the physical-chemical properties, function and biological activity of macroalgae polysaccharides. Updated results of the main poly- and oligosaccharides studied for the control of plant diseases are discusse

16. Distribution of epiphytic macroalgae on the thalli of their hosts in Cuba
We investigated the distribution of epiphytic macroalgae on the thalli of their hosts at eight localities along the southeastern coast of Cuba between June 2010 and March 2011. We divided he epiphytes in two groups according to their distribution on the host: those at the base of the thallus and those on its surface. We determining the dissimilarity between

17. Hourstonius wakabarae sp. nov. (Amphipoda, Amphilochidae) from the southeastern coast of Brazil
A new species of Hourstonius is described from the northern coast of São Paulo State. Hourstonius wakabarae sp. nov. is distinguished from the other species of the genus by the morphology and the size of the accessory flagellum of antenna 1, the articles of antennae 1 and 2, the mandibular molar, and the telson. The new species H. wakabarae lives associated

18. Adiciones a la ficoflora marina de Venezuela: III. Ceramiales y Rhodymeniales (Rhodophyta)
An inventory of the macroalgae of the subtidal zone from 5 to17 m depth was made in the localities of Puerto Maya (Aragua state), Puerto Cruz (Vargas state), Madrizquí and Boca de Cote (Archipiélago Los Roques National Park). Four new records of red algal species (Rhodophyta) are reported for the Venezuelan coast: Apoglossum gregarium, Platysiphonia cariba

19. Distinct fatty acid profile of ten brown macroalgae
It is widely accepted that the consumption of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids has beneficial effects on human health. In this work, ten brown macroalgae species collected along the Portuguese west coast were studied for their fatty acids composition by GC-MS after alkaline hydrolysis and derivatization. The results of this survey showed that different macro

20. Evaluation of impacts of climate change and local stressors on the biotechnological potential of marine macroalgae: a brief theoretical discussion of likely scenarios
Climate change can be associated with variations in the frequency and intensity of extreme temperatures and precipitation events on the local and regional scales. Along coastal areas, flooding associated with increased occupation has seriously impacted products and services generated by marine life, in particular the biotechnological potential that macroalga

21. Effect of depth on growth and pigment contents of the macroalgae Gracilaria bursa-pastoris
The effects of environmental parameters on biomass, growth and pigment content of the red seaweed Gracilaria bursa-pastoris (S.G. Gmel.) P.C. Silva was investigated under field conditions in Thau Lagoon (France). The seaweed was cultivated in cages placed at three depths (1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 m) over a one-year period. The results showed elevated biomass and gro

22. Cultivation of the red algae Kappaphycus alvarezii in Brazil and its pharmacological potential
Kappaphycus alvarezii (Rhodophyta, Gigartinales) is a red algae widely cultivated as the main source of raw material for the carrageenan industry. This hydrocolloid is normally used in the food industry as a gelling and stabilizing agent. The facility of its commercial farming based on vegetative propagation promoted the success of the aquaculture of this ma

23. Spatial variations at different observational scales and the seasonal distributions of stream macroalgae in a Brazilian subtropical region
We examined the relationships between environmental variations in lotic ecosystems with the seasonal dynamics of macroalgae communities at different spatial scales: drainage basin of two rivers (Rio das Pedras and Rio Marrecas), shading (open and shaded stream segments), mesohabitat (riffles and pools), and microhabitats. Data collections were made on a mont

24. Chemical constituents from red algae Bostrychia radicans (Rhodomelaceae): new amides and phenolic compounds
This study describes the isolation and structural determination of two amides, isolated for the first time: N,4-dihydroxy-N-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-benzamide (0.019%) and N,4-dihydroxy-N-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-benzeneacetamide (0.023%). These amides, produced by the red macroalgae Bostrychia radicans, had their structures assigned by NMR spectral data and MS analyses.
