In arid and semiarid regions, the presence of roads or firebreaks can affect microclimatic variables that influence the abundance of soil nesting ants. We studied ant nest density in environments with different soil types (loose and compacted soil), and vegetation cover (shrubland, grassland and bare soil) south of Caldenal, La Pampa, Argentina. We selected

14. Isoenzymatic polymorphism in the leaf-cutting ant Atta capiguara Gonçalves (hymenoptera: formicidae)
This study was carried out to analyze the genetic population structure of Atta capiguara from 12 nests collected in Tapejara in the state of Paraná, Brazil, using isoenzyme polymorphisms. The analyzed isoenzymes were esterases (EST - EC 3.1.1.1), acid phosphatase (ACP - EC 3.1.3.2) and carbonic anhydrase (CA - EC 4.2.1.1). Ten loci were found in A.capiguara

We analyzed the effect of fragmentation on ant species-area and specimen frequency-area relationships in nine patches of tropical dry forest in the middle Cauca river basin in Colombia. Species richness and specimen relative frequency of ants were positively correlated with area, whereas no significant correlation was found between species richness and the d

16. Level of economic damage for Atta spp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in a forest in the Atlantic Forest of the Vale do Rio Doce, Minas Gerais, Brazil / NÃvel de dano econÃmico para Atta spp. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) em eucaliptais, em regiÃo de Mata AtlÃntica do Vale do Rio Doce, Minas Gerais.
The production and quality of eucalypt plantations have been studied in areas with different densities of ant nests aimed to regionalize models of estimating economic injury by leaf-cutting ants. The effects of the site and of the eucalyptus genetic material on leaf-cutting ant nests and of their nests on wood production were studied in a eucalyptus plantati

17. Geostatistics in the sequential sampling plan of leaf-cutting ant nests in eucalyptus plantations in the Atlantic forest region / GeoestatÃstica na amostragem sequencial de ninhos de formigas cortadeiras em eucaliptais em regiÃo de mata atlÃntica
One of the basic steps of the integrated pest management is the evaluation of pest population. For this, it is necessary to know how it is distributed on the field. Regarding the leaf-cutting ants, several studies have been developed to investigate their distribution as well as how to sample them adequately, but it is also necessary to improve such studies w

The leaf-cutting ants are considered important herbivores in Neotropical primary forests because they promote spatial and temporal heterogeneity of resources such as light, nutrients and soil. Despite their known importance, their distribution in early secondary forests and their role on forest regeneration are still poorly studied. This work was developed i

19. Isolation of compounds attractive to the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa forel (hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Mabea fistulifera elaiosome
Mabea fistulifera (Euphorbiaceae)is a pioneer plant species with seeds dispersed by the ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa. Since the ants are attracted to the seeds to use its elaiosome as a source of energy, we investigated its composition. The elaiosomes from 13,000 seeds were extracted with a methanol:chloroform mixture (2:1 v/v) and yielded 22% of a residue.

21. Foraging patterns and plant biomass consumed by Atta laevigata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in area of Brazilian Cerrado / Padrões de forrageamento e biomassa vegetal consumida por Atta laevigata (Hymenoptera : Formicidae) em uma área do cerrado brasileiro
Leaf-cutting ants of the genus Atta (Formicidae: Attini) are considered highly generalist herbivores, and they have been frequently referred to as the most prevalent herbivores in the Neotropics. However, most studies on leaf-cutter ants were conducted in lowland tropical rain forests. There is only limited knowledge of the foraging patterns of these ants in

No Cerrado existe somente limitado conhecimento

23. Papel ecológico do fogo e das saúvas (Atta spp.) na ciclagem de nutrientes e carbono em cerrado / Ecological role of fire and leaf-cutting ants (Atta spp.) on nutrient and carbon cycling in cerrado

24. Interaction between ants and seeds, with emphasis in the leafcutting ants / Interação entre formigas e sementes, com ênfase nas cortadeiras
