1. Fucoidan induces G1 arrest of the cell cycle in EJ human bladder cancer cells through down-regulation of pRB phosphorylation
AbstractFucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide found in marine algae and brown seaweeds, has been shown to inhibit the in vitro growth of human cancer cells. This study was conducted in cultured human bladder cancer EJ cells to elucidate the possible mechanisms by which fucoidan exerts its anti-proliferative activity, which until now has remained poorly underst

The stimulation of vascular growth by angiogenic stem cells transplantation is a promising alternative for the treatment of PAD. Adhesive mechanisms governing progenitor/stem cell trafficking through the microcirculation of ischemic muscles are broadly unknown. The aim of this work was to evaluate the involvement of selectins on interactions between transpla

4. Competitive biosorption of nickel and copper ions on alginae and algae Sargassum filipendula / Bioadsorção competitiva dos ions niquel e cobre em alginato e alga marinha Sargassum filipendula
Environmental biotechnology studies have been conducted using alternative materials in order to eliminate heavy metal ions from industrial effluents. Brown algae are an attractive materials, due to their large availability and their reduced participation in the vital functions of marine ecosystems. The main structural polysaccharide of the brown algae is alg

The fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus is known for having diverse biological properties. This study analyzed the therapeutic action of populations of commercial fucoidan (F. vesiculosus) on zymosan-induced arthritis. Three populations of fucoidan were obtained after acetone fractionation; these were denominated F1 (52.3%), F2 (36.7%) and F3 (10.7%). Chemical a

Fucans are a family of sulfated homo and teropolysaccharides respectively, composed mainly of a- (12) and a- (13) linked by L-fucose residues. Properties such as the ability to act as an anti-contraceptive, to reduce cholesterol levels, and to act as an anti-tumor agent are much related. We have focused our attention on the anticoagulant properties, platelet

Study of the envolvement of CC-chemokines and adhesion moleculares conscription of lymphocyte T gama delta into the inflammatory reactions of allergic origin.
γδ T lymphocytes play an important role during allergic reactions, performing effector and regulatory functions. Chemokines and adhesion molecules are crucial for lymphocyte migration in response to several stimuli. However, the mechanisms by which γδ T lymphocytes migrate into the inflammatory site during allergic reactions have not been

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is systemic auto imune disorder. It is caracterized by chronic inflammation of joints leading to progressive erosion of cartilage and bone. We investigated the effect of the administration of fucoidan, sulfated polysaccharides, from algae Fucus vesiculosus in the acute (6h) in zymosan-induced arthritis (AZy). Wistar rats (180-230 g)

10. Modulation of Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Monocyte Activation by Heparin-Binding Protein and Fucoidan
Activated polymorphonuclear leukocytes release heparin-binding protein (HBP; also known as CAP37 or azurocidin) from azurophilic granules. HBP is a strong chemoattractant for monocytes that also prolongs monocyte survival and potentiates endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide [LPS])-induced production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). We investigated the bindi

11. Chitosan film containing fucoidan as a wound dressing for dermal burn healing: Preparation and in vitro/in vivo evaluation
The aim of this study was to develop chitosan film containing fucoidan and to investigate its suitability for the treatment of dermal burns on rabbits. Porous films, thickness between 29.7 and 269.0 μm, were obtained by the solvent dropping method. Water vapor permeability (3.3–16.6/0.1 g), the swelling (0.67–1.77 g/g), tensile strength (7.1–45.8 N),

12. Microtiter plate adherence assay and receptor analogs for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.
A microtiter plate adherence assay for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae was established by use of purified swine tracheal cilia which contained receptors for the mycoplasmas. M. hyopneumoniae bound specifically to plates coated with solubilized cilia. The binding was dependent on both the concentration of cilia and the number of mycoplasmas. Dextran sulfate, heparin
