1. Fish passages in South America: an overview of studied facilities and research effort

2. Culverts in paved roads as suitable passages for Neotropical fish species

3. Downstream passage of fish larvae and eggs through a small-sized reservoir, Mucuri river, Brazil
In South America, one important symptom of the failure of fish passages to sustain fish migratory recruitment is the inability of eggs and larvae to reach the nurseries. This is especially so when the breeding areas are located upstream of a reservoir, and the floodplain is downstream of the dam. Therefore, the transport of fish larvae and eggs across reserv

4. Swimming performance of the small characin Bryconamericus stramineus (Characiformes: Characidae)
Very little research has been conducted on the swimming capacity of Neotropical fish. The few studies available have focused on large migratory species. The present study used fixed and increasing velocity tests to determine prolonged and sustained speeds of the "pequira", Bryconamericus stramineus Eigenmann, 1908, a small, abundant species found in fish pas

5. Migrações ascendentes de peixes neotropicais e hidrelétricas: proteção a jusante de turbinas e vertedouros e sistemas de transposição. / Upstream migrations of neotropical fishes and hidroelectric dams: protection downstream from turbines and from spillways and fish passages.
This work aims to examine engineering, mainly hydraulic engineering, aspects related to the effects of hydroelectric dams on upstream fish migration, identifying possible measures for the reduction of fish mortality, inside turbines draft tubes and in the region downstream from spillways, and describing the most common upstream fish passages, mainly vertical

7. In vitro activities of 4-quinolones against the fish pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida.
The activities of five fluorinated 4-quinolones, namely, sarafloxacin, enrofloxacin, PD127391, PD117596, and CI934, against the fish pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida were investigated and compared with that of oxolinic acid. The results indicated that with the exception of CI934, these drugs are more active than oxolinic acid in terms of MIC. No inoculum effect

8. Fish Rhabdovirus Replication in Non-Piscine Cell Culture: New System for the Study of Rhabdovirus-Cell Interaction in Which the Virus and Cell Have Different Temperature Optima
The replication of three rhabdoviruses associated with diseases of fish has been demonstrated in cells of continuously cultivated non-piscine cell lines. Spring viremia of carp (SVC) virus and the salmonid fish viruses, Egtved and infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus, all replicated in mammalian WI-38 (human diploid cell strain) and BHK/21 cells and in ce

9. The liver of the brown trout, Salmo trutta fario: a light and electron microscope study.
A qualitative study by light and electron microscopy was undertaken on the liver of the brown trout, Salmo trutta fario. Vessels and bile ducts were observed to be scattered without any apparent order within the parenchyma. Venous profiles appeared either isolated or included in 'venous-arteriolar tracts' (VAT) and 'venous-biliary-arteriolar tracts' (VBAT).

10. Mitogenic activity from trout embryos.
An extract of 21-day rainbow trout embryos stimulated growth of several piscine cell lines in the absence of added serum. Established lines from trout (RTG-2 and STE-137), salmon (CHSE-214), carp (EPC), and goldfish (CAR) and early-passage cells initiated from trout embryos grew in serum-free medium containing the embryo extract. In addition the extract was

11. Chromosomal Integration of Transduced Recombinant Baculovirus DNA in Mammalian Cells
Our group and others have recently demonstrated the ability of recombinant baculoviruses to transduce mammalian cells at high frequency. To further characterize the use of baculovirus as a mammalian gene delivery system, we examined the status of transduced DNA stably maintained in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Four independent clones carrying two intro
