1. Epistasis interaction of QTL effects as a genetic parameter influencing estimation of the genetic additive effect
Epistasis, an additive-by-additive interaction between quantitative trait loci, has been defined as a deviation from the sum of independent effects of individual genes. Epistasis between QTLs assayed in populations segregating for an entire genome has been found at a frequency close to that expected by chance alone. Recently, epistatic effects have been cons

2. Analytical and numerical comparisons of two methods of estimation of additive × additive interaction of QTL effects
Epistasis (additive × additive interaction) plays an important role in the genetic architecture of complex traits. This study presents analytical and numerical comparisons of two methods of estimation of additive × additive interaction of QTL effects. In the first method, we observed only the plant phenotype, while in the second method we have additional i

3. Marker-assisted selection for the rice blast resistance gene Pi-ar in a backcross population.
A doubled-haploid (DH) population, obtained by anther culture of F 1 plants from a cross between a highly susceptible rice cultivar Lijiangxintuanheigu and the resistant somaclone (SC09), of the cultivar Araguaia, was used to identify RAPD markers linked to the blast resistance gene Pi-ar. The 86 DH plants, inoculated with the race IB-9 of Magnaporthe oryzae

5. Production of androgenetic barley doubled haploid lines.

6. Localization of 45S rDNA and telomeric sites on holocentric chromosomes of Rhynchospora tenuis Link (Cyperaceae)
Rhynchospora tenuis Link (Cyperaceae) is a weed widely distributed in Brazil that presents a small number of holocentric chromosomes (2n = 4) with some autopolyploid populations (2n = 8). The haploid number n = 2 is considered as a derivative of the base number x = 5. 45S rDNA probes and telomeric DNA were hybridized in both chromosome races of R. tenuis, lo

7. Doubled Haploids for Studying the Inheritance of Quantitative Characters
By using a doubled-haploid population derived from F2 plants, additive and additive x additive genetic variances, as well as the number of segregating genes, can be estimated. An F2-derived doubled-haploid population may contain almost 50% more of the best recombinant than an F1-derived population. However, the best recombinant occurs in the same frequency i

8. Quantitative Genetics of Doubled Haploid Populations and Application to the Theory of Line Development
The line value of a genotype is defined as the expected value of all lines that can be derived from this genotype. Specific genetic effects are defined for this value: only additive and additive by additive epistatic effects are necessary. There is no dominance effect for such a value. A general expression for the covariances between related lines is given.

9. Association between Rdna Alleles and Quantitative Traits in Doubled Haploid Populations of Barley
Doubled haploids (DH) were generated from reciprocal F(1) hybrids which were heterozygous for alleles at the Nor-H3 locus on chromosome 5H of barley. The r-DNA alleles did not deviate significantly from the expected 1:1 ratio and the DH progenies were classified into two groups based on the allelic constitution of the Nor-H3 locus. The DHs were grown in a ra

10. Genetic Linkage Mapping of Zebrafish Genes and ESTs
Genetic screens in zebrafish (Danio rerio) have isolated mutations in hundreds of genes essential for vertebrate development, physiology, and behavior. We have constructed a genetic linkage map that will facilitate the identification of candidate genes for these mutations and allow comparisons among the genomes of zebrafish and other vertebrates. On this map

11. Transgenic plant virus resistance mediated by untranslatable sense RNAs: expression, regulation, and fate of nonessential RNAs.
Haploid leaf tissue of tobacco cultivars K326 and K149 was transformed with several transgenes containing cDNA of the potato virus Y (PVY) coat protein (CP) open reading frame (ORF). The various transgenes containing the PVY CP ORF sequence produced (1) the expected mRNA and CP product, (2) an mRNA rendered untranslatable by introduction of a stop codon imme

12. A Multi-Marker Model for Detecting Chromosomal Segments Displaying Qtl Activity
A statistical method is presented for detecting quantitative trait loci (QTLs), based on the linear model. Unlike methods able to detect a few well separated QTLs and to estimate their effects and positions, this method considers the genome as a whole and enables the detection of chromosomal segments involved in the differences between two homozygous lines,
