37. Occurrence of Cryptosporidial Oocysts and Giardia Cysts in Bottled Mineral Water Commercialized in the City of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil
The consumption of bottled mineral water has significantly increased in Brazil so that it is in the interest of public health to determine the parasitological and microbiological status of some brands of Brazilian mineral water available in the town of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. For this purpose, detection of protozoa by direct immunofluorescence techniqu

38. Micrurus spixii (PERUVIAN CORAL SNAKE) VENOM - PRELIMINARY BIOCHEMICAL AND ENZYMATIC CHARACTERIZATION
Micrurus spixii venom was studied after fractionation by Sephadex G-100 SF gel filtration chromatography. Several enzymatic activities and biological effects were investigated in whole venom and fractions. The venom was resolved in four peaks in a range of about 73.2-10.7 kDa molecular weight. Alkaline phosphatase and acetylcholinesterase activities were fou

39. Actions of Crotalus durissus terrificus venom and crotoxin on the isolated rat kidney
Many studies have reported the occurrence of lethal acute renal failure after snakebites. The aim of the present investigation was to determine alterations in renal function produced by Crotalus durissus terrificus venom and crotoxin as well as the histological alterations induced by these venoms. Isolated kidneys from Wistar rats weighing 240 to 280 g were

40. Pesquisa de oocistos de Cryptosporidium SPP e Salmonella SPP em amostras de águas de esgoto e águas de córrego da cidade de São Paulo. / Detection of Cryptosporidium spp oocysts and Salmonella spp in sewage and creek water from São Paulo city.
A lot of studies have shown the value on researching in sewage several pathogenic microorganisms to determine possible enteropathogens that are present in communities and the risks for public health. The aims of this study were to determine the occurrence and the levels of Cryptosporidium spp and Salmonella spp in sewage and wastewater in São Paulo since th

41. Proposta de automatização do sistema de contagem de bacterias em leite
The laboratory wares which are used for analysis and which supply the needs of Brazil in the evaluation of the quality of milk are, in most of the cases, imported. The Department of Microelectronics at School of Electrical Engineering, together with Faculty of Food Engineering (both at UNICAMP) are working with a proposal for evaluation of microbiological co

42. Estudo de remoção de precursores de THMs para aguas de abastecimento
In 1974, the haloforms presence in water supply was documented for the first time. Studies conducted by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) detected the presence of potential carcinogens, in the trihalomethane form (THMs) in the water supply of several areas in the USA. Some traditional methods for the reduction of the concentration of THMs in the

43. Isolation of Campylobacter spp. from pigeon feces by a combined enrichment-filtration technique.
A technique combining enrichment in Preston enrichment broth and direct filtration onto chocolate agar was used to isolate Campylobacter species from pigeon feces. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 106 of 200 samples tested; 105 strains were isolated by enrichment-filtration, and 84 strains were isolated by direct plating. Most of the strains grew after

44. Glomerular fine structure in mixed membranous and proliferative glomerulonephritis
A case of mixed membranous and proliferative glomerulonephritis has been studied by light and electron microscopy. Electron microscopy has shown that the cellular proliferation is mesangial in origin and that there are qualitative and quantitative alterations in the filtration basement membrane. In addition there are numerous examples of direct contact betwe

45. Concentration and identification of Cryptosporidium sp. by use of a parasite concentrator.
A new disposable plastic tube device and technique for ovum and parasite concentration, with upper and lower chambers separated by a fine screen, was compared with the standard gauze and open-funnel filtration technique as well as with the technique of direct smearing with an acid-fast stain. The new concentrator was distinctly superior to gauze filtration i

46. Membrane Filtration Technique for Isolating Organisms from Raw Milk of Normal Udders1
The effectiveness of two methods for the isolation of bacteria from raw milk was investigated. Raw milk from normal udders was subjected to the direct membrane filtration technique and the 18-hr incubation technique. The results indicate that the membrane filtration technique gives a more complete picture of the flora of a normal udder than does the 18-hr in

47. Rapid detection of simulated bacteremia by centrifugation and filtration.
A centrifugation-filtration procedure was developed to expedite the recovery of microorganisms from blood. Fresh whole human blood was inoculated with various aerobic and facultatively anaerobic microorganisms (3 to 18 per ml). The seeded blood was carefully overlaid on a Ficoll-Hypaque gradient (density, 1.114 g/ml) and centrifuged (400 x g) for 45 min at a

48. Direct extraction and purification of rRNA for ecological studies.
Microgram quantities of rRNA were recovered from natural microbial communities in sediment, soil, and water with a lysozyme-hot phenol direct extraction method. Gel filtration with Sephadex G-75 spun columns readily removed humic-like contaminants without any measurable loss of rRNA and rendered RNA extracts of sufficient quality for molecular procedures.
