13. New primers for amplification of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I barcode region designed for species of Decapoda (Crustacea)
Abstract We designed 14 new primers for amplification of the COI barcode region of decapod crustacean species. We tested, with high level of success, the generation of ~ 640 ± 49 base-pair sequences in selected groups of decapods (hermit crabs, squat lobsters, marine and freshwater crabs and shrimps), encompassing representatives of 27 genera of 15 families

14. Extreme morphologies of mantis shrimp larvae
ABSTRACT Larvae of stomatopods (mantis shrimps) are generally categorized into four larval types: antizoea, pseudozoea (both representing early larval stages), alima and erichthus (the latter two representing later larval stages). These categories, however, do not reflect the existing morphological diversity of stomatopod larvae, which is largely unstudied.

15. Enosteoides Johnson, 1970 (Crustacea: Decapoda: Anomura: Porcellanidae) from the Central Philippines, with description of a new species of the genus
Abstract Three species of the porcellanid genus Enosteoides Johnson, 1970, including a new species, are reported from the Central Philippines on the basis of material mainly collected by the PANGLAO Marine Biodiversity Project 2004. Enosteoides lobatus Osawa, 2009 and E. palauensis (Nakasone and Miyake, 1968) are new to the Philippine crustacean fauna. Enost

16. A tribute to Michael Türkay (3 April 1948 - 9 September 2015): contributions and legacy of a lifelong study on New World decapods, and personal impressions
Abstract Prof. Dr. Michael Türkay, curator of Crustacea in the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum, unexpectedly passed away on 9th September 2015 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The Brazilian Crustacean Society (Sociedade Brasileira de Carcinologia ˗ SBC, in Portuguese), taking into account Michael's outstanding contribution to carcin

17. Assessing the performance of macroinvertebrate metrics in the Challhuaco-Ñireco System (Northern Patagonia, Argentina)
ABSTRACT Seven sites were examined in the Challhuaco-Ñireco system, located in the reserve of the Nahuel Huapi National Park, however part of the catchment is urbanized, being San Carlos de Bariloche (150,000 inhabitants) placed in the lower part of the basin. Physico-chemical variables were measured and benthic macroinvertebrates were collected during thre

19. Shape and size variations of Aegla uruguayana (Anomura, Aeglidae) under laboratory conditions: A geometric morphometric approach to the growth
Crustacean growth studies typically use modal analysis rather than focusing on the growth of individuals. In the present work, we use geometric morphometrics to determine how organism shape and size varies during the life of the freshwater crab, Aegla uruguayana Schmitt, 1942. A total of 66 individuals from diverse life cycle stages were examined daily and e

20. The use of lysozyme to prepare biologically active chitooligomers
Two types of crustacean commercial chitosans (CS1, CS2) were dissolved in lactic acid solutions, hydrolysed by lysozyme and finally fractioned by methanol solutions into two parts containing chito-oligomers (CS-O1, CS-O2). The antioxidant power and antimicrobial properties of both fractions were studied and compared with non-hydrolysed CS1 and CS2. The antio

22. Dieta do boto-cinza (Sotalia guianensis Van Benédén, 1864) (Cetacea: Delphinidae) na Baía de Sepetiba (RJ) / Diet of the guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis Van Benédén, 1864) (Cetacea: Delphinidae) in Sepetiba Bay (RJ)
The Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis, Van Benédén, 1864) is a small cetacean of the Delphinidae family. The species occurs on coastal waters from South and Central America, in estuarine environments, bays and protected areas. This study aims to characterize Guiana dolphin feeding habits and to investigate variation in diet related to sex age class and se

23. Checklist of Stomatopoda (Malacostraca: Hoplocarida) deposited in the MOUFPE collection, with a new record from Brazil
A total of 39 species of Stomatopoda were previously reported from marine and estuarine habitats of Brazilian waters. The present checklist is based on material deposited in the crustacean collection of Museu de Oceanografia Petrônio Alves Coelho, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, city of Recife, Brazil (MOUFPE). The collection, deriving primarily from th

24. Effects of Emerita brasiliensis flour supplementation on normotensive (Wistar) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR)
Several studies characterize the connection of overweight and obesity with chronic diseases. Therefore, new alternatives are being studied for controlling hypertension, such as chitin and chitosan fibers, commonly found on crustacean's carapace like Emerita brasiliensis. Rats from two different strains were divided into control and supplemented groups (n=6).
