1. Cadmium accumulation and toxicity in watercress (Barbarea verna), chicory (Cichorium endivia) and rocket (Eruca sativa) plants
ABSTRACT Some vegetables have the ability to accumulate cadmium (Cd)at levels that are toxic to most other plants. The objective of thisstudy was to evaluate the Cd accumulation and its toxic effects on edible vegetables. Three species were tested: watercress (Barbarea verna); chicory (Cichorium endivia); rocket (Eruca sativa) and four Cd doses (0; 1.5; 3.0;

2. Protective roles of Pyracantha fortuneana extract on acute renal toxicity induced by cadmium chloride in rats
Abstract Purpose: To investigate the protective roles of pyracantha fortune fruit extract (PFE) on acute renal toxicity induced by cadmium chloride (CdCl2) in rats. Methods: Rats were pretreated with PFE and consecutively injected with CdCl2 (6.5 mg/kg) for 5 days. Results: The concentration of Cd, kidney weight, malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (N

4. Changes in the phenylalanine ammonia lyase activity, total phenolic compounds, and flavonoids in Prosopis glandulosa treated with cadmium and copper
ABSTRACT The aim of the present work is to evaluate the changes on the phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity, phenolic compounds accumulation and photochemical efficiency in leaves of P. glandulosa treated with Cd2+ (0.001 M) and Cu2+ (0.52 M) concentrations for 96 h under hydroponic conditions. The results showed that only leaves treated with copper ha

5. Heterologous expression of a rice metallothionein isoform (OsMTI-1b) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae enhances cadmium, hydrogen peroxide and ethanol tolerance
Abstract Metallothioneins are a superfamily of low-molecular-weight, cysteine (Cys)-rich proteins that are believed to play important roles in protection against metal toxicity and oxidative stress. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of heterologous expression of a rice metallothionein isoform (OsMTI-1b) on the tolerance of Saccharo

6. Interactions between plant hormones and heavy metals responses
Abstract Heavy metals are natural non-biodegradable constituents of the Earth's crust that accumulate and persist indefinitely in the ecosystem as a result of human activities. Since the industrial revolution, the concentration of cadmium, arsenic, lead, mercury and zinc, amongst others, have increasingly contaminated soil and water resources, leading to sig

7. Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) as a Biondicator of Copper and Cadmium Toxicity. A Bioavailability Approach
The acute toxicity of copper and cadmium in Oreochromis niloticus was evaluated through a 96 h static assay. Precipitation of Cu and co-precipitation of Cd in the presence of Cu were noted, being indicative of differences in nominal and actual concentrations of metals. Under these conditions, LC50-96h was determined as 3.53 mg L-1Cu, 20.1 mg L-1 Cd and 1.36

8. Disponibilidade de Cd em Latossolos e sua transferência e toxicidade para as culturas de alface, arroz e feijão / Cadmium availability in Oxisols and its transfer and toxicity to lettuce, rice and bean crops

9. Cadmium and Chromium Toxicity to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Microcystis aeruginosa
The toxicity of cadmium and chromium to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Microcystis aeruginosa was evaluated through algal growth rate during 96h exposure bioassays. Free metal ion concentrations were obtained using MINEQL+ 4.61 and used for IC50 determination. Metal accumulations by the microorganisms were determined and they were found to be dependent

10. Foliar nitrogen and changes in free amino acid composition of Solanum lycopersicum under cadmium toxicity: kinetics of 15NH4+
Glutamate metabolism and amino acid translocation were investigated in the control and cadmium stressed shoots of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum - 63/5 F1), using (15N) ammonium and (15N) glutamate tracers. Regardless of organ type, [15N] ammonium assimilation occurred via glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2), in the control and stressed plants, and it did not de

11. Fitoextração em solo contaminado com metais pesados / Phytoextraction of soil contaminated with heavy metals
The industrial and urban progress associated with increased production of consumer goods has resulted in the generation of waste, which, for a long time, was indiscriminately discarded in the environment, causing damage usually irreversible to recover. Two experiments were conducted in soils contaminated with heavy metals: the first aimed at the disposal of

12. Caracterização ambiental da bacia do Alto Jacaré-Guaçu (experimentos laboratoriais e in situ): elaboração de sedimentos sintéticos para avaliação da toxicidade do cádmio / Environmental characterization of the Alto Jacaré-Guaçu River Basin (Laboratory and In situ experiments): Formulation of synthetic sediments for assessing the toxicity of cadmium
