13. Cough threshold to citric acid in diabetic patients with and without autonomic neuropathy.
The cough reflex has been investigated in insulin dependent diabetic patients with and without autonomic neuropathy. The cough response to inhaled citric acid was determined in eight patients with diabetes who had severe autonomic neuropathy and compared with that in 10 who had no evidence of neuropathy. The patients with autonomic neuropathy had a higher me

14. The role of autonomic neuropathy in diabetic foot ulceration.
Five standard, non-invasive tests of cardiovascular, autonomic function were performed in each of four groups of 30 subjects: controls, group 1, diabetics without clinical evidence of neuropathy; group 2, diabetics with neuropathy, but without foot ulceration; group 3, diabetics with neuropathic ulceration of the foot. The results showed a significant impair

15. Peripheral motor nerve function in diabetic autonomic neuropathy.
Motor conduction velocity was measured in the median, ulnar and common peroneal nerves of 32 diabetics with clinical features of autonomic neuropathy. The responses to the Valsalva manoeuvre and sustained handgrip, and the postural fall in blood pressure were used to assess the integrity of the autonomic nervous system. Abnormalities in the three autonomic f

16. Silent ischaemia in diabetic men with autonomic neuropathy.
Autonomic neuropathy is associated with an increased incidence of silent myocardial infarction and sudden death. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of silent myocardial ischaemia in diabetic patients with autonomic neuropathy and without. Five standard autonomic function tests were performed on 41 men with diabetes: postural change i

17. Autonomic neuropathy in systemic sclerosis: a case report and evaluation of six patients.
We describe a case of systemic sclerosis with sympathetic and parasympathetic neuropathy and detail autonomic testing in six further patients. Of these six patients, three showed early parasympathetic damage. None of the patients had evidence of peripheral neuropathy, and there was no correlation between the presence of autonomic dysfunction and the severity

18. An hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy transmitted as an X-linked recessive trait.
Five members of a single family presented with neuropathic deformities and ulceration of the feet developing in the first and second decades of life, and progressed slowly over many years. In this form of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy, there was minimal tendon reflex impairment, cutaneous sensory impairment was restricted to the feet, and there

19. Acute autonomic neuropathy following primary herpes simplex infection.
A 13-year-old girl presented with postural hypotension, severe abdominal pain and diarrhoea, parotid pain and a transient encephalopathy. There was evidence of an acute autonomic neuropathy and some electrophysiological evidence of a transient peripheral somatic neuropathy. The likely cause was primary herpes simplex infection.

20. Acute autonomic neuropathy in association with systemic lupus erythematosus.
A patient is described with acute autonomic neuropathy, developing post partum in association with systemic lupus erythematosus, and showing a rapid clinical response to steroids. The pattern of tissue damage is suggestive of an immunologically mediated mechanism.

21. Supersensitivity to both tyramine and noradrenaline in diabetic autonomic neuropathy.
Cardiovascular responses to intravenously infused tyramine and noradrenaline were measured in five normal subjects, five insulin-dependent diabetics and five insulin-dependent diabetics with autonomic neuropathy. Tyramine infusion produced a statistically significant increase in systolic blood pressure (BP) in the autonomic neuropaths only (p less than 0.001

22. Autonomic neuropathy in systemic sclerosis.
Autonomic function assessed by tests of cardiovascular reflexes was studied in 25 patients with systemic sclerosis and 10 patients with primary Raynaud's phenomenon. A comparison was made with 13 normal healthy subjects. Significant abnormalities in the cardiovascular reflexes were found in systemic sclerosis, both in the CREST (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenome

23. Abnormal vascular reflexes in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
Vascular reflexes were assessed in 17 adult patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease using the Valsalva manoeuvre, and the pulse rate and systolic blood pressure responses to standing. Six patients showed abnormalities consistent with an autonomic neuropathy. One patient had giant nerve fibre bundles in the myenteric plexus of bowel resected for co-existent

24. Oesophageal motor changes in diabetes mellitus.
Radiography and manometry have been used to study oesophageal motor function in a group of 31 diabetics, 23 of whom had alimentary or genitourinary symptoms attributed to autonomic neuropathy. Peristalsis was of diminished amplitude and oesophageal emptying in the 15 degrees Trendelen-Peristalsis was of diminished amplitude and oesophageal emptying in the 15
