RESUMO

This dissertation proposes a discussion about the question of meaning, related to circulating themes in academic context, especially when post-graduate students in various phases of the process of titulation use the word work and some related verbal forms - work with, work at, work (transitive) - in their discourses. The data were collected through the method of semi-structured interview. As theoretical construct, we use the bakhtinian concepts of word, verbal sign, utterance, discursive genre, theme, composicional form and style. The study begins with a historical thematic survey related to discourses about work, in which we found four recurring themes - product, process, value and property, also present in the utterances in the interview. On analysing the themes in connection with the academic context, we noticed that they aim at a greater theme - the recognition. This last theme confronts the world of labor with the academic world in a symbiotic way. The use of the linguistic forms in the academic world aims at getting recognition from the world of labor by valorising the academic activity, seen as a process of construction in opposition to the world of labor, seen as a world of products. In its turn, the world of labor gets recognition from the academy as a source of professionals to enter the academic process to obtain titles. This titulation guarantees the quality of the products offered by an interprise of work, also called organization of work, and maintains the academy
