RESUMO

The work here presented intends to contribute to the debate surrounding the relation between media and politics, highlighting the aspects that contribute to the interaction between these two social fields as well as existing tensions. The purpose is to investigate how the press contributed to the construction of the public image of the president of the Brazilian Chambers of Deputies, Severino Cavalcanti, elected to the 2005-2007 biennium. Analyses are conducted on the coverage made by four magazines with national circulation: Veja, Época, Istoé and Carta Capital; for an eight month period, begin with the campaign to the Chambers presidency and extending until the resignation of the Representative. The theoretical debate is based on the categories created by Pierre Bourdieu, according to these categories the media and politics represent independent fields that interrelate in the social universe.
