RESUMO

The goal of this dissertation was two folded. First, the pattern of migration to different economic regions in Brazil was analyzed. Then, the migratory return flow to a former place of birth, the so called return migration, was studied. The data shows that states or regions that traditionally provided workers to other regions in the country, like Minas Gerais and Northeast, are now getting back a significant part of their native population. The work makes use of a microeconomic model based on choices for identifying the individual with larger propensity to migrate to some regions of the country or to return to his/her original state. Results point out that, independent of destination region, the migrate person tend to be a single, not retired, young person or an adult, that went to college. There were evidences that the return migration flow is composed by young people or adults, that went to school, and are mostly self employed, informal workers or unemployed
