RESUMO

The purpose of this research is to present a case based system to support students during the search for a solution to a landscape design problem. The system model is based on computational theories applied to design, such as Alexander s pattern language, shape grammar and parametric modeling. In the system, a design concept, also called pattern, can be represented as a schematic shape grammar rules or by its derivations - rule application. The patterns are connected to each other framing a network similar to Alexander s pattern language hierarchy structure. However, differently from Alexander s system, the precedents (or design references) are not encapsulated in a pattern. In this case, precedents are responsible to structure the other branch of the network. The prototype developed in this research is filled with concepts and design precedents extracted from Roberto Burle Marx landscape designs. Burle Marx can be seen as an expert, since his work contains an expressive parcel of concepts that belong to the landscape architecture universe of discourse. These are the sort of reference that students should research during design process. Beyond the structure to search for design concepts and precedents, it s also proposed an interactive module implemented in a parametric design tool. This module allows students generate and insert automatically different parametric components, such as a group of trees, bushes, sculptures, in a digital 3D model. Using that module students can create design solutions, assisted by the precedent based system, entirely through a digital media. Some tests were performed with undergraduate students in a workshop to prove the system efficacy. The tests helped to verify the hypothesis and showed how design references are a very important design tool. In the near future is expected that the implementation of an online system can help students, supporting them during design process. The work hypothesis is that the use of generative systems and design references can collaborate to increase teaching efficiency without the reduction of work quality or creating boundaries in student s creativity
