RESUMO

How do people perceive space simulated by virtual reality and can such resource can be used in the architectural design evaluation process? This is the question which guided this research. An earlier work verified that subjective questions (with a scale of values of efficiency) are less efficient to evaluate the user s perception in a simulated environment with passive virtual reality (VR) when compared with objective questions (with specific answers as yes or no or with checklists). Meanwhile questions with answers in scale of values give more return to designers about the users opinion of a project. Therefore, in order to improve performance of perception maintenance between the simulated environment and the prototype measured by subjective questions we believed that free experimentation of a simulated environment in exploratory VR would be better than passive VR. In agreement with this induction it was realized an experiment during the event UNICAMP de PortasAbertas (UPA) in 2005 to evaluate if exploratory virtual reality implemented by software Quicktime VR and Quest3d should help the user and the designer in understanding the architectural project and if there should be any difference in perception maintenance between these to kind of VR implementation. The experiment compared the participator s perception in the UPA 2005 between virtual environment and prototype. The studied environment was composed by a study/work table, space for chair and partially closed book shelve. The questions used to evaluate the perception were related with space/comfort to open the book shelve door and space/comfort to circulate between the table and the book shelve. The participant first experimented the simulated space and then answered to the questionnaire, after that he/she experimented the prototype answering the same questions. The perception maintenance was calculated between the answer comparison of identical questions about the simulated environment and the prototype. It was concluded that the non immersion or the minimal immersion (or less interaction and more interaction) offered in the VR implementations with Quicktime VR and Quest3d respectively influenced divisively and without pattern the perception maintenance in the studied sample. It was observed, on the contrary of the expected a smaller perception maintenance with exploratory VR than that presented by previous research using passive VR. It was verified that the filter perceptions such as age, sex, study level, familiarity with computer 3D animation and with the studied environment influence differently depending on the question used in the questionnaire and on the VR implementation. Another conclusion is about the scale of values adopted for subjective question in the perception maintenance calculation, they were not capable to confirm participant opinion and indicate extreme care in the development of a questionnare for this purpose.
