RESUMO

The stability of a building and consequently the safety of its occupants, in a fire situation are directly on to the structure performance mechanical properties of the concrete when submitted high thermal loads. When a concrete structure is submitted to the action of a fire occurs a process of heat transference, for radiation and convection, in the surface of the structure. And by conduction through the interior of the struture. From the heat impact on the structure a series of physical and chemical processes modify substantially the mechanical characteristics of the concrete, such as the spalling. The spalling can occur in a explosive form. This phenomenon was observed in our experiments realized, in spite of the concrete used in our experiment was of normal density. The objective of this study is to investigate the residual mechanical properties of the concrete, dosed with common materials of use in the Pernambuco state, when submitted the high temperatures. A series of 250 specimens was molded and heated during 30 minutes to temperatures of approximately 450ÂC and 600ÂC in the furnace. After the concrete specimens were burned, they were submitted to two types of cooling: a) a slow one where the concrete was removed of the furnace and left to the environment to cool; b) a brusque one where the specimens were removed from the furnace and placed in a tank with water, in order to simulate the action of the firemen; c) the specimens were tested also hot. The intern and superficial temperature of the specimens were observed by thermocouples. The results of these residual mechanical properties of the concrete will be presented and discussed in this work
