RESUMO

This research sought after the understanding of the relationship construction process of the Vasco fan with the Vasco da Gama Club, Rio de Janeiro. The objectives of this study were: To know what takes millions of people to opt for supporting this club;to know the meaning of this club in their lives; to understand how those people live those experiences; and to identify which are the peculiar characteristics of the Vasco supporter. For such, the cultural approach was chosen, using as field data collection the participant observation technique, documental analysis, field recording and semi-structured interviews. This study indicated that the fan usually becomes interested in the soccer team because of family bonds, bonds of friendship, for living close to the club, for identifying himself or herself with the origin and/or history of the club or for living, in that choosing phase, moments of success or failure of the team. Besides, supporting a club represents the possibility of "public expression of feelings", using an expression of Geertz. Soccer would be a way, among others, in which the individual could express his or her feelings in a public manner, which is built and is symbolically shown in the heart of a certain culture. The fan s intense relationship with the club does not let him or her separate the identity individual/fan. This identity is reached through experiences, which include moments of happiness and sadness in this history/relationship. With respect to the specific characteristics visualized in the relationship fan with Vasco, the anti club- the archrival club- was found, in this case, the Flamengo Club. The interesting thing about this relationship of opposition is exactly the sense that brings to the act of supporting Vasco, as if the Vasco fan detined himself or herself as a non Flamengo fan. The Vasco fan identifies his or her club and its supporters as being different from the others by a series of values. For the Vasco supporter, Vasco differs from the other great clubs of Rio de Janeiro for being a representative of the minorities, as the black people, the poor, the portuguese and the suburban. This idea was perpetuated by the history of its consolidation in the twenties, by the representativeness of the "Victory Express" and by the conquests of the 80s and 90s. lt was also noticed a tension among the several forms of supporting, in which it is sought to rank who is a "more Vasco fan". For the fans, Vasco is a reference of time and space. Starting from the relationship built with this club, individuals position themselves and search for sense for their lives.
