RESUMO

Located half-way down to the mouth of São Francisco River, the Sobradinho Dam was built in the early 1970s. It affected around 72 thous and people and submerged villages and four towns - Pilão Arcado, Sento Sé, Remanso and Casa Nova. In order to resettle such a large number of people, the São Francisco Hydroelectric Company (herein CHESF) endeavored an ambitious plan. It consisted in (a) rebuilding the submerged towns; (b) relocating a small number of families on the banks of the lake-to-be and (c) transferring approximate lyfour thousand families from the rural zone to the Special Colonization Project on Serra do Ramalho,in the town of Bom Jesus da Lapa. For as long as it based on duress and false promises, CHESF did not succeed in transferring the families from the submerged towns onto the Special Project. The Company was then forced to improvise twenty-seven resettling centers on the banks of the lake, aimingat shelteringmost families affected. This work aims at looking into the experiences and the fantasy conceived and reconceived both by the thous and families in the beradero villages in Casa Nova town -who were transferred to and stayed in the Special Colonization Project on Serra do Ramalho - and by part of the population who retumed to the lake banks - called the the sorry ones by those who remained there. The dissertation also seeks to explain what the beradero life was based on. Yet, it stresses the cultural dissonances and disparities that characterized the relation ship between the two main social actors, namely the State and the Sanfranciscan beraderos, who met face to face all throughout the compulsory displacement and relocating process
