RESUMO

This research examines the role of translation and the mother tongue in learning a foreign language, focusing on the acquisition of vocabulary. The aim is to observe how Brazilian learners deal with the meaning of English words separately and in context and to ascertain whether they can learn the foreign language the way they learnt their mother tongue, naturally, without worrying about the means. For this purpose, translation activities and bilingual dictionaries were employed. The research is based on studies of the role of the mother tongue in foreign language acquisition and translation. This research is descriptive, explorative and qualitative. It is also bibliography and experimental, using questionnaires, interviews and the translations of the Brazilian learners of foreign language. Oral and written activities were also employed with these learners in their own classroom by using participant observation. The main conclusions relate to the importance of translation in acquiring or learning the lexis of the language being studied, to adequate use of bilingual dictionaries and to appreciating the contribution of the learners own language and culture.
