RESUMO

This dissertation covers a study of the language of popular videos produced in Pernambuco (Brazil) during the 80âs. The corpus of analysis comprises two videos, Who sees the face sees the AIDS and the Our history and the history of Cabo Gato, produced by distinct groups and involving diferent processes of production. The aim is to identify common elements that compose the expressive materiality of these videos. Which amounts to a interdisciplinary approach, based on three analytical categories defined by the Russian philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin: dialogism, polifony and carnavalisation. Based in the research data and in our analysis, we concluded that the videos have been shot from two models of production, videoprocess and videoproduct, these models implied some degree of dependence in relation to specific social movements and the use of the video in a social perspective. In language terms, the popular video in Pernambuco followed the trends of the contemporary art and revealed itself as essentially hybrid, because its expressive materiality came from the dialogue and the contamination between the academic, the massive and the popular. We have also proved that the production of popular videos in Pernambuco raised from the initiative of middle sectors, with different levels of articulation on social movements. While trying to achieve a positive visibility to the popular fights, fought by those who are marginalized from mass media, the producers have also disclosed aspects of the daily life and the culture of the less-favored sectors of the population, favouring the consciousness of local identities
