RESUMO

Recent technological advances in microelectronics, computer science and telecommunications open new possibilities for patientsâ vital signals remote monitoring, which can reduce hospital costs of internment for long periods, allow diagnosis by specialists of more advanced medical centers, besides providing an increment in patientsâ quality of life. Several academic and commercial projects have been developing microcontrollerbased remote monitoring devices. Such devices are programmed to execute functions related to the signal acquisition, treatment, storage and data transmission. However, the increasing demand for more functionalities, adequacy to new communication standards, diversity of hardware platforms and increase of development productivity remain as challenges in the context of computational resources scarcity common in this type of device. This work presents a framework designed to support the development of vital signals monitoring applications, the TinyMonitor, based on the TinyOS operating system. In order to take advantage of the TinyOS component-based programming model, TinyMonitor defines a component model which contemplates the main functionalities of this application class, allowing the addition of new signal capture and processing modules and providing the flexibility to support different storage and datacommunication standards thought the easy extension, replacement and reuse of modules. The proposed model was implemented as part of a case study for the development of an electrocardiographic signal monitoring application. Later, this initial implementation was extended to add the processing of the cardiac frequency. This study case was validated through simulation using the Tossim simulation tool for TinyOS
