RESUMO

Three different methods were used to prepare patients for gastroscopy. The objective of the study was: to assess systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation before, during, and after gastroscopy in patients who received information, conscious sedation and deep sedation, comparing data inter and intra-groups. Patients: 297 patients without comorbidity (N:136-45,8%-females; N:161-54,2%-males), ages between 15 and 87 years (Mean age: 45,04; SD:17,22),divided in four groups according to their age: 30 years, 31 to 45 years, 46 to 60 years and 60 years. Materials and Methods: an endoscope, appropriate instruments to assess heart rate, oxygen saturation and blood pressure, and sedative medication were used. Patients were referred to different forms of preparation (information, conscious and deep sedation) in sequence and according to their age. Results: Heart rate, blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) increased during the procedure for all patients, specially for younger patients who received information and conscious sedation. Oxygen saturation decreased for older patients, shortly after sedative drug administration. Conclusion: All patients should receive continuous monitoring during endoscopic examination. For younger patients, it is important to pay attention to heart rate and blood pressure, specially for those with cardiac disease. For older patients, besides heart rate and blood pressure, it is important to monitor oxygen saturation, specially for those with chronic lung diseases. There is not a best way to prepare all patients who go through endoscopy. Choice for preparation should consider patients individual characteristics, like age, comorbidity, obesity, low hematocrit and style to cope with invasive medical procedures.
