RESUMO

The gathering of people in São Paulo city at the end of the XIX century starts to shape it into a modern city, which establishes itself as a metropolis at the end of the XX century. The Samba rhythm, much more than just a musical style, comes from the rural areas of the São Paulo State and in the bringing together of people, takes urban features and is used as a common voice by the newcomers, the vast majority of cheap labour. The growth of the gathering imposes a need of change to the Samba, so to be incorporated into the upcoming dynamic of it, as well as into social transformations which were happening, generating peculiar centralities. Not seen favourably by the society of the city, the Paulistas, until practically the end of the XX century, perhaps till today, we place ourselves to reveal in what context the Samba developed (from the beginning of the XX century until the beginning of the XXI century), always with a point of view based on the urban growth of São Paulo city, understanding its values and how these contributed in the formation of the citys typically urban and peripheral culture, formed a great deal by black rural people who found vast heterogeneity of human and cultural types which apparently could not mix, but ended up identifying with one another and based themselves in the same feeling which belonged to a new reality, now urban, in their lives. As a trajectory, the Samba travels from rural to urban and serves as a reading foundation to the metamorphosis of the Brazilian society, having the city of São Paulo as a reference in the interior of the modernization of the gathering and its metropolitanization.
