RESUMO

The identification of the librarians self-image is the main theme of this research, taking into consideration the changes that have been taking place in this field, and the durability of an image that is not very enlightening, since it points out to low visibility and low social recognition of the professional as well, led us to investigate the ideas, opinions and perceptions of the librarian about himself/herself, thus establishing the specific objectives: check if there is any influence of the academic formation on the professionals self-image construction; check if the changes were noticed by the librarian in his/hers professional activities in the present context; identify the way the librarian perceives the image society has of this profession, and in the end identify the characteristics and abilities the librarian considers important for the profession. Due to its descriptive nature, the research used the survey method, thus collecting data by means of the application of questionnaires to a sample of 120 librarians who are working in the city of Salvador Bahia, in different kinds of libraries: school ones, specialized libraries, public ones and university libraries. Focusing in on one group allowed us to go deeper into themes brought about by the technique used before. In order to treat and analyze the data, quantitative and qualitative approaches were used. The results obtained by means of the research revealed the librarians lack of satisfaction with formation they had during graduation and the search for continuous education, showing an expressive number of specialization courses. The professional way of doing things, sustained by new information and communication technologies seems not to have suffered significant alterations in the various kinds of libraries. Nevertheless, professionals point out to the relevance of technology in the improvement of their activities. When understanding his/her self-image, the librarian expresses a kind of consciousness in which duality is affirmed. Besides the perception of the potential value of his/her professional way of doing things while responding to social demands, there also is the perception that this value is neither noticed nor recognized by society.
