RESUMO

This investigation - and ethnographic, self-observation study carried out in an English language classroom - is supported by theories of literacy and critical reading and by views of pedagogical interaction. The main objectives are to evaluate the effects of different kinds of interactional strategies on the teaching of critical reading, and to investigate and describe the characteristics of the teacher-students-text interaction that most promote the co-construction of critical reflection and dialogical consciousness-raising. To this end, the study draws on Neo- Vygotskian theories of social interactionism, which provide the principal instruments of analysis. The analyses showed that - contrary to what certain post-structuralist views ofthe reading classroom would predict - the teacher s intervention in the critical reading classroom is not always negative and authoritarian. It can take place in either a monological or in a dialogical way. This study suggests that the centralizing role of the teacher during the interaction is not the only obstacle to a dialogical consciousness raising; the teacher s insecurity vis-à-vis the work of coconstruction is another important obstacle. The thesis concludes that any theory of dialogical consciousness raising must take into account the role of interactional resources that promote situated interpretation, in which the student reader s universe of experience is brought to bear on the work of co-construction and "unveiling"
