RESUMO

The present dissertation focusses on studying the works of Brazilian playwright Jorge Andrade, concentrating efforts on the analysis of two basic aspects that underly ali of his plays: time and memory. This study is intended to demonstrate how the two above mentionned aspects are manifested through countless relationships, such as the solid equivalence that exists between personal memory and society, which at its turn, can be linked to a more general historical processo This link with History can serve as the basis for dramatical analysis, since Jorge Andrade depicts on the stage the decadence of the coffeefarm owning aristocracy in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, in an attempt to reinterpret the History of Brazil. For this reason the past is revisited enabling the Author, through his writing and due questioning of the writing process, to bring back to life a series of moments and events he personnally had experienced. These moments and events can, for the most part, be traced back directly to moments of Brazilian History. This way, time and memory are responsible for the distant pursuit, while the writing activity establishes the reference element that engenders the whole process of lost memories.
